EducationI earned my bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Physics. I have studied teaching methods and learning styles as part of continuing education while teaching at Chippewa Valley Technical College.
ExperienceI started tutoring in the Academic Skills Center at UWEC and discovered it was a hidden talent. While working there, I gained experience with a variety of learning and developmental disabilities, including Asperger's syndrome, visual impairment, brain damage, and dyscalculia. Since I began tutoring privately, my experience includes working with elementary age through adults. I have also taught math for trade students at Chippewa Valley Technical College.
My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems, which promotes greater confidence in their own abilities. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, analogies, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Learning can be hard work at times, but I strive to make it exciting and rewarding. I love watching light bulbs turn on!
Discounts are available for students who prepay and the first hour of tutoring or evaluation is always free. Please contact me for references.
HobbiesI enjoy reading about a variety of subjects and often say that my goal in life is to learn everything. My activities include bicycling, singing, playing with children, and clumsily trying to imitate Christ.
